The Five Sailed Windmill

Alford Five Sail Windmill

Alford’s five-sailed windmill, a Grade I listed structure built in 1837, stands as a significant landmark in Lincolnshire. Recognised for its historical and architectural value, the windmill has been a focal point for both residents and visitors.

In January 2023, East Lindsey District Council secured £8 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to support the Lincolnshire Wolds: Cultural & Heritage Programme. This initiative aims to revitalise at-risk heritage sites, including Alford Windmill, Alford Manor House, and Spilsby Sessions House.

Specifically, £1.1 million of this funding is allocated to Alford Windmill. The redevelopment plans encompass:

  • New Visitor Centre: Construction of a visitor centre featuring a café and shop to enhance the visitor experience and generate sustainable income.
  • Miller’s Cottage Conversion: Transformation of the existing Miller’s Cottage into holiday accommodation and office space, providing additional revenue streams.
  • Educational Space: Refurbishment of the sail store to serve as an academic area, promoting learning about the windmill’s history and milling processes.
  • Children’s Play Area: The former pigsty will be converted into a play area for children, making the site more family-friendly.
  • Landscaping Enhancements: Improvements to the surrounding grounds to create a welcoming environment for visitors.

In addition to the Levelling Up Fund, Lincolnshire County Council the Windmill current owners, has pledged to support the windmill’s restoration.

These efforts aim to preserve Alford Windmill’s heritage, boost local tourism, and contribute to the town’s economic development. Construction is expected to commence in 2025, with hopes to open to the public in 2026.
